Philadelphia train crash kills six, dozens injured

Six passengers were confirmed dead and scores more injured after an Amtrak train derailed near Philadelphia en route to New York City.

Six passengers were also reported critically injured an official said.

The Amtrak Regional 188 was carrying 238 passengers and five crew members when it went off the track on a curve at around 9:30pm in what has been described as "an absolute disastrous mess," by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.

"I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. There were cars completely overturned, on their side, ripped apart," he said.

"Chairs inside the train became unscrewed and suitcases were falling on people," said train passenger Max Helfman.

"People were bleeding from their head. It was awful."

Hundreds of fire fighters and police responded to the crash scene in the Port Richmond area and several passengers had to be freed with hydraulic tools, Philadelphia fire department deputy commissioner Jesse Wilson said.

Transportation Department officers were at the scene along with FBI agents although officials stressed there is no eveidence to suggest it was deliberate act of sabotage.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and injured in this accident. We are assembling on site and will begin a thorough investigation into the cause of this accident," said acting Federal Railroad Administrator Sarah Feinberg
