Philippines AirAsia has appointed Captain Dexter Comendador as interim chief executive following the abrupt resignation of Joy Caneba.

Comendador will take over at the end of July and is a former officer of the Philippine Air Force and served as a commercial pilot for various airlines.

He began as director of flight operations at Philippines AirAsia in 2011 and progressed to chief operating officer in 2015.

"We are pleased that Captain Dexter has agreed to step into the interim CEO role and we are excited about the important change and strategic direction that we are committed to bring for our guests and travelers here and abroad. We remain focused on driving solid growth with emphasis on quality and innovation," said Philippines AirAsia chair Maan Hontiveros.

Caneba is leaving to return as partner at law firm Santiago, Gaspar, Caneba & Franco.

"I have no doubt that under Captain Dexter’s leadership, the team will continue to succeed. I am thankful for the support of the stockholders," she said.

The airline, 40% owned by Malaysia’s Airasia group, has 12 aircraft serving domestic routes and destinations in Korea, Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China.
