Germany: Berlin proposal includes barrel-organ music and grilled sausages

Plans for an “old German-style” theme park at the famous Berlin landmark known as Checkpoint Charlie are causing bitter rows among German politicians, according to The Independent.

The newspaper reports that the famous site, which once saw “Russian and American tanks facing each other in anger”, will soon play host to “barrel-organ music, grilled sausages and the world’s largest travelling exhibition of handmade metal objects for home and garden”. The organiser of the project, Gunnar Reich, apparently is keen for the venture to the included in the Guinness Book of Records.

The proprietors of the existing museum at Checkpoint Charlie told The Independent: “Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous crossing point in divided Berlin. It is a disgrace to build a market with ridiculous wooden houses here.” However, the city authorities are loathe to enter the argument because the land is actually the property of an American company, which is leasing it to Mr Reich.
