Portugal tourism chief meets with UK travel trade
Portugal’s Minister for Tourism is in the UK this week to launch a major promotion campaign designed to boost tourism during the economic downturn.
With the credit crunch expected to impact travel bookings in 2009, Portugal will embark on a joint promotion effort aimed at both consumers and the trade, working closely with tour operators across the UK.
Minister Bernardo Trindade is meeting with tour operators and airlines to encourage them to strengthen and diversify their operations.
“The tourism market is facing tough times across the whole of Europe,†he said.
“However, Portugal is committed to overcoming these challenges by investing in the promotion of our country in the UK – and maintaining our status as a popular tourist destination.â€
In 2009, Portugal has allocated 20% more money to tourism promotion, representing the biggest public push the country has ever undertaken.
