Predicting the new Faliraki
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has reportedly published a list of destinations it believes will attract large numbers of British tourists “and become the next Faliraki”.
A report in Saturday’s Daily Telegraph states that after discussions between the FCO and the Federation of Tour Operators and ABTA, the FCO is predicting that there will be “increased demand” among young people for Bodrum, Turkey; Ayai Napa, Cyprus; San Antonio, Ibiza; Kavos, Corfu; and Malia in Crete.
Paul Sizeland, consular services director at the FCO, told the newspaper: “We have worked with the travel industry to find out where increased demand is anticipated and where the next Faliraki will be. We are now ahead of the game and have six or eight months of planning time. These are places where we are likely to see a demand for consular services; on the back of that we will review the level of safety in resorts.”
While he admitted that lessons could be learned from the goings-on in Faliraki this summer, he reportedly told the Daily Telegraph that he did not believe the FCO could have done anything to prevent the trouble.
