Qantas fares ‘too cheap’
Qantas has come under fire from tourist chiefs in an exclusive Australian destination, who are complaining that the carrier is offering flights too cheaply.
The BBC News website today quotes the Gold Coast Bulletin, which reportedly led with the headline “Damn you, Qantas”, going on to state: “We are Australia’s five-star resort capital, not your no-frills Hicksville.”
The carrier has answered the criticism by pointing out that its new Jetstar service offers ticket prices some 30% lower than before – and that its business-class service, which is to be discontinued, attracted just two or three customers a day.
The newspaper has no launched a competition to find out what its readers think of the move; the prize is a return trip to Sydney – with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin.
The BBC suggests that the issue for Qantas is a serious one because it is “struggling to compete” with ever-increasing competition from no-frills carriers.
