Queensland to bid for 2032 Olympics
The Queensland state government is fully behind Brisbane’s bid to become host city for the 2032 Olympic Games.
The Federal Government is in favour and if it gives the official green light backed by funding, a bid will likely be submitted to the IOC.
The bid would be based in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and state premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says nearly 80% of venues are already in place, thanks to the Gold Coast’s hosting of last year’s Commonwealth Games.
"This is about so much more than a few weeks of sport. Hosting the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics could be a game-changer and deliver 20 years of accelerated opportunity for our state. We will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure we receive the financial support we require from all levels of government."
"It’s an opportunity to showcase Queensland to the rest of the world," she added.
It would become the third Aussie city to be an Olympic Summer Games host after Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.
Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said his government would back the bid but no details on funding have been disclosed yet.
Next year’s Olympics are taking place in Tokyo.
