RAF jets scrambled to mark unidentified aircraft

Fighter jets were scrambled from an RAF station in Scotland yesterday after one or more unidentified aircraft flew close to UK airspace.

The Ministry of Defence said the Typhoon jets involved were from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray.

A spokeswoman said they were scrambled as a ‘precautionary measure against a potential incursion into UK area of interest.

She added: "At no time was there a threat to UK airspace."

It is not known whether they were shadowing a commercial passenger plane that had failed to communicate with air traffic control, or a military aircraft from another country. However, in the past the jets have been scrambled to follow Russian military jets flying close to UK airspace.

The Typhoons later returned to Lossiemouth.
