Registrations open for southern Africa’s great bike trek

Registrations are now open for the Nedbank Tour De Tuli 2014, taking place in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe from August 1-6.

Children in the Wilderness (CITW), organisers of the annual mountain bike tour, said a limited number of places were available and that the event attracted cyclists from across the globe.

All funds raised by the tour are channelled directly into CITW, a non-profit organisation that runs sustainable education programmes to bridge the divide between communities and the adjoining wildlife areas they live next to.

Through Eco-Clubs and educational CITW Camps, rural children are taught to respect their environment and to appreciate the long-term value of conservation, becoming the future custodians of Africa’s pristine wilderness areas.

Said Sue Snyman, CITW programme director: "Over the past 10 years, we have hosted approximately 2369 cyclists and raised R11.6 million (US$1.1m) for sustainable education programmes across southern Africa that have reached over 5000 children."

The Nedbank Tour de Tuli provides cyclists with the opportunity to follow ancient elephant and other wildlife trails in the remote wilderness protected areas.

The route also includes cultural interactions with the local communities living on the boundaries of these protected areas.

Participants are split into manageable groups that are led by a qualified wildlife guide.
