Australia’s consumer watchdog has put airlines on notice over possible domestic airfare hikes.
With the upending of air travel in the Middle East and surging fuel costs, the ripple effects will soon be felt in the Australian domestic market.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it will closely monitor airlines’ activity over price hikes and cancellations.
“While market conditions will ultimately determine the cost of flying, we are closely monitoring price movements, market behaviour and the airlines’ representations to consumers,” ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said.
“We will act if there is behaviour that contravenes competition and consumer laws.”
Brakey says the longer the crisis in the Middle East continues, the greater the impact will likely be for travellers.
“If jet fuel prices remain elevated for a prolonged period, this could ultimately lead to higher domestic airfares.”
