Renewable energy seen as critical
The critical importance of renewable energy to sustainable development will be among topics discussed at the upcoming Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism on 24-28 June.
“With high energy costs in the Caribbean, our message to hotels has consistently focused on efficiency and reduction of consumption through implementation of environmental management systems,” said Deidre Shurland, director of the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism.
Her group advocates the adoption of best renewable energy practices and savings through investments in technologies by small, medium and large hotels.
Lelei LeLaulu, president of Counterpart International, one of the event’s organizers, said public awareness of the importance of renewable energy to sustainable development is generally low in small island developing states.
“Sustainable energy drives sustainable development,” he said.
