Report Forecasts 1.1bn World Tourists by 2010 New Source Markets and Development
The VISION/TOTEM Sustainable Tourism Report 2008 forecasts 1.1bn world tourists by 2010 from developing source markets and as a result of activity by tourism development agencies.
“Although global tourism growth is challenged by climate change, the high fuel prices and the increasing costs of food and water, we see a real increase is on the cards, both in quantity and quality of tourists.†Said Valere Tjolle report editor and principal editor.
“New markets are being opened up faster than old ones are slowing. India, China, Latin America and the ex Soviet Union states have got an increasing appetite for tourism. In 2006 some 34m outbound tourists came from China this increased by over 14% in 2007. Russia alone is now easily in the top 10 tourism source markets with over 14m outbound tourists.â€
“The trickle-down earnings of developing populations is burgeoning. There is a projected increase by 2030 of an astonishing 600% (from 352m to 2.1bn) people in developing countries earning over US$16,000 UK£8,000 Euro10,000.†Travel is now becoming a serious option to a rapidly growing section of the population.
“The great news for sustainable tourism is that the market segment currently making the most impressive global gains is the LOHAS market (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability). This is now the premier market of aspiration and a natural partner for sustainable tourism.
