Réunion Island posts record air passengers in 2025, eyes connectivity boost in 2026
Réunion Roland Garros International Airport, near the capital city Saint-Denis, confirmed its robust activity in 2025. The airport welcomed 2.765 million local passengers, up 4% on 2024. The airport is now pushing ahead with key projects in connectivity, infrastructure, and operational performance as it heads into 2026.
Passenger traffic: record levels across the network
Passenger traffic reached historic highs in 2025, totaling 2,764,811 local travelers, a 4% increase over 2024. Following a strong rebound in previous years, growth continues, even as aircraft movements dipped 2.2%, reflecting airlines’ optimization of capacity and schedules.
Traffic remains concentrated in three main regions:
-
Metropolitan France: 1,630,089 passengers (59%, +4%)
-
Indian Ocean: 1,045,708 passengers (38%, +3%)
-
International: 89,014 passengers (3%, +19%)
Several markets stood out for growth above the network average:
-
Thailand: 89,014 passengers, +19.5%, driven by Air Austral’s international services.
-
South Africa: 26,628 passengers, +14.2%, signaling a market recovery but still below pre-COVID levels.
-
Mayotte: 216,193 passengers, +10.8%, benefiting from the island’s role as a mini-hub for Comoros connections after direct flights ceased.
Metropolitan France, the backbone of Réunion’s traffic, posted solid gains, supported by four French carriers serving the airport regularly (Air Austral, Air France, Corsair, and French Bee). Leisure, low-cost carrier French Bee, in particular, saw strong growth in both capacity and market share.
Mauritius, served by Air Austral and Air Mauritius, recorded a more moderate increase but remained dynamic, with 663,323 passengers (+2%), securing second place in the airport’s passenger traffic.
Traffic to Madagascar held steady at 137,602 passengers, though growth slowed in late 2025 due to political events on the island.
Transit traffic also showed strong momentum, with 60,871 connecting passengers, up 13.9% versus 2024, reinforcing Roland Garros Airport’s ambition as a regional hub.
2026 outlook: connectivity, sustainability and infrastructure
Looking ahead, Réunion Roland Garros Airport is continuing to enhance connectivity.
Biggest news is the return of a non-stop flight from and to Toulouse, in France. The direct Toulouse-Réunion service will be operated by Corsair from June 15, 2026 with two weekly frequencies (Monday and Wednesday out of Toulouse- Sunday and Tuesday from Réunion). The route will be served aboard an A330neo with three levels of comfort, offering passengers an exceptional long-haul experience.
Other connectivity projects include new regional and international links, particularly to Asia and Africa. Talks recently started with India’s low cost carrier IndiGo for a flight to Chennai. Réunion Island has indeed a large Tamil community coming from that area.
Plans for a new departure terminal, designed for 4 million passengers, are ongoing, with studies underway and construction of the first phase set for 2027.
The airport is also advancing its energy transition, including a new photovoltaic plant at the cargo area, aiming to cover 50% of the airport’s energy needs by 2028.
