Royal Caribbean goes WiFi on new mega-ship
Extensive WiFi capabilities will make a new mega-liner from Royal Caribbean International one of the most technologically advanced, the company claims.
The first of two Ultra Voyager vessels – which at 158,000 tons will be the largest cruise ships at sea – is to be named Freedom of the Seas.
Announcing the name, Royal Caribbean claimed the vessel will have some of the largest cabins and most spacious balconies in the cruise industry. Helping achieve this will be the use of space-saving flat screen TVs in all cabins and public areas.
Few other details of Freedom of the Seas have yet emerged, other than the fact that the 3,600-passenger ship will operate seven-night Caribbean itineraries from Miami in April, 2006. Bookings are due to open next spring.
But the company said the flat-screen TVs would “dovetail” with other technologies on board to make Freedom “the most digitally advanced cruise ship at sea”.
Extensive WiFi capabilities will be deployed offering connectivity for regular mobile telephones.
Freedom of the Seas, which will feature elements from existing Voyager-class ships such as a rock climbing wall and ice rink, is currently under construction in Finland.
Royal Caribbean chairman and chief executive Richard Fain said: “Its name was chosen deliberately to convey the enormity of features and amenities offered on this extraordinary ship.”
