Royal Caribbean orders third Icon-class LNG ship
Royal Caribbean Cruises has inked an agreement with Meyer Turku Shipyard for a third Icon class cruise ship.
The shipyard said construction of the 200,000 gross ton ship will start next year for an expected delivery in 2025.
The Icon class vessels are among the first mega liners to be fully powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Meyer Turku is also building the first two which are set for completion in 2022 and 2024.
LNG offers reduced emissions by one fifth compared to conventional heavy fuel oil.
"We’ve designed a class of ships powered by liquefied natural gas that leverages the latest, environmentally-friendly applications," said Royal Caribbean Cruises chairman and CEO, Richard Fain.
