Runway collision narrowly averted at Texas airport
A Southwest Airlines jet and a cargo plane narrowly avoided a runway collision.
A FedEx plane landing had to abruptly change course after the Southwest flight was wrongly cleared to take off .
It happened at Austin-Bergstrom Airport.
“The FedEx pilot discontinued the landing and initiated a climb out,” the FAA said.
The FAA and NTSB are investigating the incident.
The cargo plane had already been cleared to land before an air traffic controller allowed the other aircraft to depart.
“A FedEx Express flight safely touched down after encountering an event just before landing,” FedEx said..
The FAA is also probing an incident at Newark Liberty International Airport a day earlier.
Two United Airlines jets clipped wings, causing damage to one.
