Ryanair makes last-ditch attempt to avert strike

Ryanair is expected to notify passengers of any disruption to its flights later today if the Irish pilots’ union rejects the airline’s last ditch attempt to avert strike action on Thursday.

The airline has agreed to meet Forsa, the trade union, at a neutral venue at Dublin Airport today or tomorrow to try to resolve the dispute before the planned 24-hour walkout on July 12.

Ryanair claims the proposed industrial action is being led by Aer Lingus pilots within the Irish Air Line Pilots Association (IALPA) to try to disrupt Ryanair’s during the traditional two-week summer holiday in Northern Ireland.

Although only pilots based in southern Ireland will take part in any industrial action, a strike will hit the many passengers who travel from the north of Ireland to fly from Dublin.

Irish national broadcaster RTE reports that Ryanair is understood to be working on a contingency plan, and is expected to notify passengers today of any potential disruption to their flights.

IALPA claims a ballot of pilots directly employed by Ryanair resulted in 99% voting in favour of a strike, but Ryanair claims this only represents 27% of its employees in the Republic of Ireland.
