SA Tourism celebrates inaugural Emirates Cape Town route
In May, South African Tourism helped celebrate the launch of Emirates Airline’s daily flights from the UK to Cape Town via their hub in Dubai, by joining an inaugural industry party of tour operator and industry partner VIPs.
The trip saw senior executives from Emirates Tours, South Africa Tourism, Wexas, Thomson Worldwide, Hays & Jarvis, Travelmood and the Flight Centre enjoy a fam trip around the Cape Town area highlighting future developments as well as some of the city’s top tourist attractions.
A key selling point for the travel industry, the new Emirates route is the first to offer regional flights to Cape Town from the UK; with departures from Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow as well as from Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
The trip also enforced the message that South Africa is considered one of the most exciting long-haul destinations to visit, as well as offering great value for money holidays, especially true considering the current strength of the Pound against the Rand.
Cape Town is investing more than R7 billion (₤ 50 million) over the next four years on expanding and improving its famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. The plan includes commercial facilities, a new, R900 million (US$132 million) luxury hotel by the One & Only group, new entertainment areas, new shopping developments, apartments and offices, a cruise ship terminal, train station and improved connections with the airport.
Lebo Mokhesi, Country Manager for South African Tourism in the UK, commented on the flight launch and its anticipated impact: “Cape Town is heralded as one of the world’s top 10 cities. This is due, in part, to its world class food, drink and variety of tourism attractions. The new Emirates route will make Cape Town more accessible to a larger number of passengers from across the UK and we therefore anticipate more first time visitors to the city this year.â€
“The launch has come at a good time for those wishing to visit Cape Town and South Africa during its celebrations for Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday and also ensures more flights for the FIFA world cup championships in 2010. Cape Town is continuing to improve and grow; we are glad that more people will be able to get the chance to enjoy its unique qualities and attractions. â€
