San Diego hopeful of Americas Cup nod
Citing its experience of hosting other major sporting events, The Port of San Diego is making a final push to host the Americas Cup in 2017.
City officials have posted a video online extolling the city’s consistent breezes and track record of big name events such as Super Bowl, World Series and golf’s US Open.
San Diego has also previously hosted Americas Cup in 1988, 1992 and 1995.
The city is in competition with Bermuda to win the right to stage the 2017 competition.
The deadline to announce the winning bid is not until he end of the year but there has been growing speculation that a winner could be unveiled this month.
If San Diego gets the nod, racing will take place on the bay between Harbor Island and the Embarcadero, making it visible to shore spectators as well as a TV audience.
The 2013 Americas Cup at San Francisco was the first to be raced inshore and organizers want to continue the so-called concept of stadium sailing.
