Sarajevo is strengthening its position as one of Southeast Europe’s fastest-growing city break destinations, with the latest tourism figures showing robust growth in both visitor arrivals and overnight stays.
According to the Sarajevo Canton Tourism Board, March 2026 saw tourist arrivals increase by 12.7% year-over-year, while overnight stays surged by 34.6% compared with March 2025. The significant gap between arrivals and overnight stays suggests visitors are extending their stays and exploring more of the destination beyond traditional short city breaks.
The positive trend extends across the first quarter of the year. Between January and March 2026, Sarajevo Canton recorded a 4.4% increase in arrivals and a 25.4% rise in overnight stays compared with the same period in 2025.
Tourism officials say the figures reflect growing international awareness of Sarajevo’s blend of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and modern Balkan heritage, as well as expanding air connectivity and a broader tourism offering.
Visitors continue to arrive from a diverse range of source markets. The largest numbers of guests come from Croatia, Turkey, Serbia, China, Germany, the United States, Montenegro, the United Kingdom, Slovenia and Italy. Turkey remains the leading market for overnight stays, followed by Croatia, Serbia, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Montenegro, China, the U.S., the UK and Italy.
Record-Breaking 2025
The latest gains build on a record year for Sarajevo tourism in 2025. The Canton welcomed 854,957 tourist arrivals in 2025, generating 1,967,853 overnight stays. This represented a 5% increase in arrivals and an 11.8% rise in overnight stays compared with 2024. Top markets were Turkey, Croatia, China, Serbia, Germany, the United States and Austria.
Nationally, Bosnia and Herzegovina welcomed nearly 2 million tourists in 2025, including a record number of international visitors. The country recorded 1.96 million arrivals and more than 4.08 million overnight stays, with foreign travelers accounting for over 70% of all overnight stays.
Air Connectivity Driving Growth
A key factor behind Sarajevo’s tourism success has been improved air access. The destination now benefits from direct connections to 39 international destinations, supported by tourism and route development incentives. More than 95% of surveyed visitors cited direct flights as an important factor in choosing Sarajevo. 2026 continues to see more airlines adding flights to the Bosnian capital.
Airlines have added flights from Berlin (Eurowings), Paris-Orly (Transavia) while Ankara (AJet), is due to start from July 1, further strengthening the city’s links with key European and regional source markets.
Sarajevo International Airport has also experienced rapid expansion, posting passenger growth of 34% during 2025. The airport handled a total of 2,226,692 passengers. The Tourism Board says 17 new direct air routes were launched as part of its long-term tourism development strategy.
New Tourism Investments
The destination is also investing heavily in tourism infrastructure and visitor experiences.
Among the largest projects is the continued modernization of the city’s Olympic mountain resorts on Bjelašnica and Igman. Nearly 35 million BAM (€18 million) has been invested in ski infrastructure, lighting systems, safety improvements and year-round tourism facilities in recent years.
Sarajevo is also expanding its hotel inventory, particularly in the upscale and boutique segments, responding to growing demand from leisure and MICE travelers. International hotel brands have increased their presence in the city over the past few years, while local investors continue to upgrade accommodation stock.
Beyond the city center, tourism authorities are promoting attractions such as the traditional mountain village of Lukomir, the Olympic mountains, hiking and cycling routes, and cultural experiences linked to Sarajevo’s unique multicultural heritage.
With visitor numbers continuing to rise and infrastructure investment accelerating, Sarajevo appears well positioned to remain one of the Balkans’ most dynamic urban tourism destinations.
