The oldest music festival in Italy, and one of the most famous, the Maggio Musicale in Florence was founded in 1933 and will take place from May 24 to June 30. It features two months of opera, concerts, ballet and exhibitions. Having only missed a few years during the war, in 2007 it celebrates its 70th edition. For full details of the programme, please visit the Maggio Musicale website.
From June 3 the Museo de Bargello in Florence celebrates one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance, Desiderio da Settignano, who sculpted most of his work in marble. This exhibition sets out to highlight the various genres and different subjects of the artist’s work while paying homage to one of the most illustrious marble virtuosos in Florence.
The Hermitage Museum of Tzar Nicholas I in Palermo celebrates the reopening of Palazzo Sant’Elia after its restoration. The event is part of a wider program titled “Notti bianche – White Nights” in Palermo. At the core of the exhibit is the collection of 35 statues and paintings acquired or commissioned by Czar Nicholas I on the occasion of his trip to Italy in 1845. On display are the works of the most important masters of neoclassicism, such as Antonio Canova, Pietro Tenerani, Emil Wolff, Karl Wichmann and Luigi Bienaimé. Noteworthy are also the portraits by Ridolfo Ghirlandaio, Tiziano, Luca Giordano, Francesco Bassano and Giovanni Battista Pittoni.
The Rolex-Capri Sailing Week will be held from May 15 to 19, 2007. The Rolex Cup, the prestigious event that epitomizes Italy’s sailing tradition is back again with fabulous Capri serving as the set. Organized by Italy’s most famous yacht clubs, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the Yacht Club Capri, this is truly a not-to-be-missed appointment for fans of sailing and the sea.
