EasyJet has estimated the cost to the airline of last month’s disruption due to the UK airport security alert to be in the region of £4 million.

The budget carrier had to cancel 496 flights in total – 290 on the day of the initial disruption, 122 on August 11 and a further 67 flights through to Monday, August 14.

The airline said it accommodated the majority of affected passengers on alternative flights and offered free changes to bookings or refunds.

Additional costs included passenger assistance and compensation. Revenue was also hit during the period and in the immediate aftermath.

In spite of this, easyJet has maintained its guidance for profit growth for the full financial year ending September 30 of 40%-50%.

Figures for August show the airline carried 8.4% more passengers year-on-year at 3.1 million, with a marginally increased load factor of 89.2%.

Total revenue on a rolling 12 month basis for the period ending August 2006 was £1,597 million, up 21% on the previous period.
