Service held at Old Trafford to remember 1958 air crash
A service has been held at the Old Trafford to mark 60 years since an air crash that killed 23 people, including eight Manchester United players.
The crash, on February 6 1958, happened at Munich Airport on the team’s return from a European Cup tie in Belgrade.
Eight players, three staff, eight journalists, two crew members and two passengers were killed when the team’s chartered British European Airways aircraft crashed on its third attempt to take off from a runway in slushy conditions.
Survivors, former United players Sir Bobby Charlton and Harry Gregg, were at the ceremony, along with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Wreaths were laid by the current manager Jose Mourinho and captain Michael Carrick.
The service included a minute’s silence at 15:04, the time of the crash.
