Seven killed in Australian Embassy blast

Wednesday, 09 Sep, 2004 0

At least seven people have been killed – with hundreds injured – in a bomb attack near the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia.

While nobody inside the embassy is believed to have been seriously hurt, most of the building’s windows were smashed by the explosion, which is reported to have been caused by a car bomb.

Several reports have suggested that the blast was the work of Azahari Husin, one of Asia’s most wanted men, who has been linked to the 2002 Bali attack that killed 202 people.

The online news provider Ananova quotes a security official as saying: “We believe Azahari is behind this. He has the expertise to manufacture the explosives required for a bombing of this scale.”

Australia’s government has already stated that it believes the target was Australian nationals; the Sydney Morning Herald quotes Foreign Minister Alexander Downer as saying: ““It is clearly a terrorist attack, it was outside the Australian embassy, you would have to conclude that it was directed towards Australia.”

Indonesian television has reported that the blast could be heard some 15 kilometres away.
