Shanghai drivers face crackdown
SHANGHAI – Vehicle drivers in Shanghai are being told to go easy with their car horns or face fines of about US$25.
Authorities have lost patience with drivers who shatter any peace and quiet Shanghai might enjoy.
From the end of this week, cars, mopeds and bicycles that have tooted needlessly on any street within Shanghai’s outer ring road could be subject to fines, the Shanghai Daily said.
“The crackdown even extends to police cars, who are banned from using their sirens during the day, except in emergencies,” the paper said.
The longer drivers blow their horn, the bigger the fines they can expect.
Shanghai is worried about its image ahead of the 2010 World Expo. Beijing has also introduced a series of good behaviour measures ahead of the 2008 Olympics – including a crackdown on horn blowers.
Beijing also plans to equip the capital city’s 45,000 taxis with spit-sacks to curb drivers’ habits of winding down their windows and spitting into the road.
