Singapore still in discussions to hold 2020 F1 race
Singapore says the Formula 1 Grand Prix could still go ahead this year, but has ruled out holding the flagship race without fans.
It hasn’t given up hosting it although time is running out to make a firm decision for the September race.
As it is run at night on a street circuit, organisers start making preparations about three months in advance.
Organisers said they are continuing talks with F1, the Singapore government and other stakeholders ‘to assess different possibilities.’
However a spokesperson said it was ‘not feasible’ to hold the race without fans.
"We will continue to keep a close watch on developments. Our utmost priority remains the wellbeing and safety of our fans, staff, volunteers, and all Singaporeans," the spokesperson said.
Other races held on dedicated circuits will go ahead behind closed doors, although it would present major logistical challenges in Singapore to keep all spectators away from what are public streets.
Ten races were cancelled or postponed and F1 hopes to start the season with two races in Austria in July.
