Snow and ice bring further flight disruption
Passengers due to fly today are being urged to check with their airlines to make sure their flights are still operating as many services have been cancelled as temperatures continue to plunge, bringing snow and ice to much of the UK.
In London, more than 100 flights have been cancelled at Heathrow, London City Airport is warning of widespread disruption until mid-morning and Stansted also has a number of cancellations.
British Airways said it had again proactively cancelled a number of flights from Heathrow today due to the predicted bad weather. As forecasters have warned conditions are not likely to improve before the weekend, further cancellations are expected. The airline, which is giving passengers due to travel up to Friday the option to delay their flights, said it would aim to publish a list of each day’s cancellations by 5pm of the previous day.
Gatwick said the airport was operating normally this morning, but urged passengers to check for any delays or cancellations with their airlines.
Norwich Airport in East Anglia, which has experienced some of the heaviest of the snowfall, is closed until midday. Glasgow Airport suspended flights until 8.30am, while Aberdeen said ‘various’ inbound services had been cancelled.
Passengers are also being warned to take extra care travelling to airports and to leave more time for their journeys as many roads are treacherous and some rail services have been delayed or suspended. Stansted Express trains were running with delays of up to 40 minutes this morning, while both Gatwick Express and Heathrow Expres trains were suspended.
