South African beach closed after shark attack
South African authorities have closed a beach indefinitely after a shark attack killed a surfer near a popular tourist area.
Ngidi Msungubana, 25, died after repeated bites as he surfed off Second Beach in Port St Johns on the Wild Coast.
Officials described how the victim fought with the shark yesterday for around five minutes before being dragged bleeding out of the water, reports the Daily Telegraph.
The beach is being studied by experts after a spate of shark incidents. This is the sixth fatal attack on this beach since 2007.
The Wild Coast spans 300 km of coastline between Port Edward and Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape and is known for its natural untouched beauty.
It is a popular tourist destination with various nature reserves and guest house accommodation.
The upmarket resort of Umngazi River Bungalows and Cremorne Riverside Holiday Resort are nearby although they are both set on the river rather than the sea.
