Spirit to furlough hundreds more pilots
Spirit Airlines will furlough at least 330 pilots in its latest cost-cutting move to stave off a possible bankruptcy.
The airline says it will furlough the pilots from January 31, 2025.
Also, 120 captains will be downgraded to first officers at the same time in a move that was previously announced.
It will be the second batch of pilots to be furloughed.
The airline has also offered voluntary unpaid leave for cabin crew members.
Spirit aims to save about $80 million next year in reduced manpower costs.
It reported a net loss of $158 million in the second quarter, and a Q3 loss is expected.
It was recently reported Frontier Airlines, which tried but failed to reach a merger deal, has resurrected plans to take over Spirit.
The struggling airline has discussed a possible bankruptcy filing with its bondholders and a merger with Frontier could well be part of any bankruptcy resolution plan.
