With Virgin Blue buying Embraer’s and 737’s, Qantas and Jetstar buying more 320’s, CEO of Tiger Airways’ parent Singapore Airlines says that Tiger will need to acquire more narrow body aircraft to realise its launch and growth in Australia.

In a Bloomberg report. Singapore Airlines CEO Chew Choon Seng said Tiger Air, would probably need single aisle aircraft such as the Boeing 737-800 or the. A320, adding, “Tiger has plans to start the new operation in Australia, so they will have to plan their aircraft needs”, adding that the number of planes “hasn’t been determined as yet”.

Tiger Airways is 49% owned by Singapore Airlines and is reputed to have plans planes to crack Qantas’s and Virgin Blue’s hold on flights between Australian cities such as Melbourne and Sydney, the world’s third-busiest route, with the low-cost carrier saying it plans to start services this year with five A320 planes on as yet unannounced routes.

According to British travel company OAG, which collects data from more than 1000 airlines, there are almost 800 flights a week between Melbourne and Sydney with the route trailing only Barcelona to Madrid and Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro globally.

Tiger Air has also said that the Qantas purchase by APA indicated that “Australian consumers are paying too high a price for the cosy duopoly that currently exists within the Australian domestic market”.
