Stansted growing faster than Heathrow or Gatwick
Growth in passenger numbers at London Stansted is outstripping growth at both Heathrow and Gatwick.
MAG, the group, which owns Stansted, Manchester, East Midlands and Bournemouth Airports, said Stansted has added 1.2 million passengers year-on-year this summer, compared to 0.9 million at Heathrow and 1 million at Gatwick.
This makes it the fastest growing major airport in the UK.
"Stansted is now handling 4.8 million more passengers than when MAG acquired the airport in early 2013, an increase of 27.4%," said the group, releasing its interim half-year results until September 30.
"The airport still has significant spare capacity and is well-placed to meet future growth in London’s aviation demand, prior to any new runway being built."
Meanwhile, a record number of passengers are using Manchester Airport and August was the busiest month in its history.
East Midlands Airport performed slightly ahead of expectations, despite passenger numbers dropping by 0.2 million (6.5%) year on year, driven by withdrawal of flights by Monarch.
Bournemouth Airport performance was in line with the previous year.
MAG reported a 10.7% growth in Group earnings [EBITDA] to £202.5m, driven by new routes and record passenger numbers across the group, up 5.7% to 29.7 million.
CEO Charlie Cornish said the group had its ‘busiest summer ever’ as it approaches the milestone of handling 50 million passengers a year.
"At a time when other airports are running out of capacity, our airports provide a solution to the UK’s aviation needs both now and in the future," he added.
