States must lift tourism spend
State tourism budgets must be increased to address a fall in visitor numbers, the Federal Government has claimed.
Federal Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said sharp falls in domestic tourism in NSW and South Australia reflected the need for greater funding.
A new report by Tourism Research Australia found the number of domestic overnight trips taken was down by two million (eight percent) to 23.5 million for the year ending March 2006. In regional NSW, the fall was 10 percent.
In SA, there were 610,000 fewer domestic overnight trips – down to 5 million – which was an 11 percent fall.
Nationally, the number of domestic overnight trips is down seven percent but the number of Australians heading overseas is up seven percent.
“The NSW Government must reverse its budget cuts to address the decline in domestic tourism, in particular in regional NSW. Other states should learn from the mistakes of NSW and boost their tourism budgets,” Ms Bailey said
