Stranded traveller called home from glacier

A British adventurer was rescued from an Icelandic glacier after phoning his father for help.

Alex Hibbert, 25, was on a 120 mile trek with climber Finn McCann when they became trapped by storms at the edge of the notorious Vatnajokull ice cap, reports the Daily Mail.

In -10C temperatures, the tent collapsed and its poles snapped, forcing the pair to wrap the canvas around them to keep warm.

With their satellite phone almost out of battery, they called Alex’s father in Portsmouth, Hampshire, who  alerted the local Solent coastguard and then the Falmouth coastguard who deal with international issues.

Coastguards in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik co-ordinated local teams during a five-hour rescue in the dark to save the men.
