Struggling Spirit Airlines to furlough 1,800 flight attendants
Spirit Airlines will furlough 1,800 flight attendants this year, as the cash-strapped airline works through its second bankruptcy reorganization.
The Carrier announced the ‘difficult decision’ to put them on temporary leave after announcing major network cuts.
“We recognize the impact of this decision on affected team members, and we are committed to treating them with care and respect during this process,” the airline said.
Spirit filed for bankruptcy protection again this summer and recently announced it is exiting a dozen cities.
According to the Association of Flight Attendants, the airline is seeking seek volunteers to take six-month or one-year furloughs starting in November.
If not enough come forward to will start involuntary selections based on seniority.
“The significant reduction of aircraft and flight hours requires a much higher reduction in force,”
The airline has struggled since the pandemic and posted losses of more than $2.5 billion since 2025.
