Surprising study finds AmEx cheapest for business travel

American Express Business Travel offers the lowest business travel rates available online when compared to the public fares of three other online agencies.

Those three were Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity, said a study from Harrell Associates.

“Our research flatly debunks the myth that the online agencies are lower-cost alternatives for business travel booked online,” said Bob Harrell, CEO and principal for the Online Travel Benchmarking Group that conducted the study.

The study found that for total trip rates, which included a combination of airfare, hotel stay and car rentals, Travelocity was 9% higher than American Express. Orbitz was 5% higher, and Expedia was 6% more.

The report found that Expedia airfares were, on average, 9% higher than American Express. Orbitz was 8% higher and Travelocity 12%, regardless of advance purchase.

The Online Travel Benchmarking Group says it analyzed 440 itineraries from 110 top business travel routes, both domestic and international, to arrive at its findings.
