Sustainable Tourism CRC new CEO

Ian Kean, who has served as Sustainable Tourism CRC’s interim CEO for the past three months, has been appointed to drive the Centre’s ambitious research program, and undertake a re-bid strategy to secure the future of high quality research and development for Australia’s tourism industry.

Mr Kean said, “I will be working closely with our 16 university partners and TAFE to continue to deliver practical research outcomes, which increase the productivity and effectiveness of Australia’s tourism industry.

“At the same time, it is crucial that the Centre work with its partners and stakeholders to unite industry needs into a cohesive R&D effort, and protect Australia’s competitive advantage in the global tourism market place.

“We are a collaborative organisation dedicated to sustaining and improving tourism’s significant contribution of $58 billion to the Australian economy, which is approximately 7% of GDP.

“Our focus must be on building a unified platform where all the diverse sectors including transport, accommodation, infrastructure, hospitality, retail and others can all find significant benefits that improve their bottom line, while supporting the communities and environments that are part of Australia’s vibrant tourism experience.”

Mr Kean is a highly respected tourism industry professional with previous CEO appointments to Tourism Tropical North Queensland, the New Zealand Tourism Board and Queensland Tourism and Travel Corporation. Mr Kean will continue as Executive Director of the APEC Centre for International Sustainable Tourism (ACIST), the research arm of the APEC Tourism Ministers’ Working Group, based at Sustainable Tourism CRC headquarters.

Sustainable Tourism CRC Chairman, Sir Frank Moore said the Board’s appointment of the new CEO reinforces the Center’s standing as a key contributor to the Australian tourism industry.

“Ian Kean’s appointment comes at an important time for our research centre. He is the ideal candidate to build and maintain the strong relationships between our industry and tertiary institution partners. Our Centre is well positioned to deliver critical innovations to adapt to the challenges of climate change, as well as resolve the important issues of improving tourism yield and building ever-more resilient tourism enterprises that underpin Australia as a leading tourism destination in the world.”

“In addition to the new CEO, the Sustainable Tourism CRC will, in the very near future, be engaging a new Director of Research, who will collaborate with our industry and government partners to deliver a research program for our CRC’s third round bid in 2008.”
