Sweden introduces border checks due to migrant crisis

Sweden has introduced border checks for travellers from Denmark to reduce the number of migrants arriving in the country.

In response, Denmark has tightened security at its border with Germany.

Travellers wanting to cross the Oresund bridge – which connects Malmo and Lund to the Danish capital of Copenhagen – by train or bus, or use ferry services, will be refused entry without the necessary ID documents.

Rail users heading to Sweden will now have to change trains at Copenhagen Airport and go through ID checkpoints, reports the BBC.

Rail operators have reduced the number of trips to Sweden and have warned that there might be significant delays.

Under the new law, transport companies face fines if travellers to Sweden do not have valid photo ID.

Fencing has been put around one of the platforms at the train station at Copenhagen’s Kastrup Airport, Radio Sweden reported.

The Swedish government has secured a temporary exemption from the European Union’s open-border Schengen agreement, in order to impose the border controls.
