Sydney council leaders takes aim at cruise ship pollution
Ships arriving at Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal will soon be faced with an unwelcome sight when docking at the port.
The Leichhardt Council says it will erect a giant banner accusing cruise ships of causing air pollution by not switching off when docking at the terminal.
A second banner will be placed to ’embarrass the NSW government’ into taking action to cut pollution in the vicinity, according to a news report in the Daily Telegraph.
"The cruise ship industry remains in denial about the severe impact it is having on local residents," said Leichhardt councillor John Stamolis, who acknowledged ships were forced to run engines as there is no ship-to-shore power outlets at the terminal.
Carnival Cruise Lines CEO Ann Sherry called the action ‘shortsighted’ and nothing more than a political move.
"The council’s short-sighted stance shows no understanding of the thousands of businesses, jobs and NSW families that benefit from the economic activity generated by cruising" Sherry said.
"This includes businesses and individuals supplying ships with fresh food and produce, driving taxis or delivering local tours in Sydney and in regional areas."
