Table Mountain security scare
Authorities in Cape Town have reportedly stepped up security measures because of an increase in attacks on tourists visiting the city’s Table Mountain.
According to The Daily Telegraph, tourists from Britain, Germany, Austria and Japan have all been mugged or raped on the mountain, which towers over the city.
Now, the newspaper reports, tourist authorities, hiking organisations, the city council and police have joined forces to try to prevent the attacks.
Fiona kalk, of the Table Mountian national park board, is quoted as saying: “With every attack on the mountain, security is heightened. But, because access to the mountain cannot be restricted, the criminals just move to another sector.”
A police spokesman reportedly added: “These gangs and individuals target foreign tourists in particular, hoping they will be carrying more items of value than local people. “The Foreign visitors are often carried away with the beauty of the area and regard it to be as peaceful as it looks. But they should take the same precautions as they would in any other city.”
