Tarkine Wilderness gets the cash……………….

Sunday, 11 Oct, 2007 0

The Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, the Honourable Malcolm Turnbull, has announced funding of $440,000 for enhanced visitor access at the Southern Tarkine Gateway.

The grant has been made available under the Australian Government’s Tasmanian Forest Tourism Initiative to Tarkine Wilderness Pty. Limited (TWPL), the owners of the Corinna Wilderness Experience.

Directors of TWPL have been working closely with Parks and Wildlife, Tasmania, to develop Corinna into a significant tourist attraction. This successful partnership will continue with the development of three new experiences, possible from this funding.

The first will be the construction of a jetty and board walk into Lover’s Falls, downstream from Corinna. The Falls are surrounded by a huge cylindrical rock face which comes alive at night with glow worms.

The second project will be a walk from Corinna to the Savage River, where the remains of an old ship, the SS Croydon are visible. This is the furthest inland shipwreck in the country. The new walk, about 2 km long, will pass through some magnificent primary rainforest.

The third project is an upgrading of the existing Huon Pine walk at Corinna to a wheel chair accessible track. This popular short walk carries excellent botanical interpretations and will be a rare opportunity for disabled people to access the temperate rainforest of the Tarkine.

Plans and approvals for the walks will commence now with a view to construction during 2008. These exciting developments come on the back of a complete restoration of the historic mining town, the addition of 14 new cottages and an historic hotel, and the restoration of the legendary huon pine river cruiser, Arcadia II that makes it home the Pieman River at Corinna.
