Tempo offers Middle East travel guarantee

Tempo Holidays is monitoring the situation in Egypt but has stopped short of cancelling its itineraries.

"We are very aware of the current situation and will continue to monitor events constantly through our suppliers and the Australian government," said Cox & Kings corporate director Nigel Loveday.

"Although all services are currently running normally, we understand that some passengers who are about to travel to Egypt may feel anxious," Loveday said.

"As such, we are making it as easy as possible for clients who are scheduled to travel during July to cancel their arrangements and receive refunds on land services if they wish.

"We will review the policy at a later date for arrivals beyond July, as it is too early to assess matters."

Tempo Holidays has also introduced a Middle East Guarantee for its programmes in Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Lebanon.

It has been developed to provide travellers with an assurance that should the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) post an overall ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory on any of these countries – or a similar advisory on a location within these countries which appears on clients’ itineraries – they may cancel up to 24 hours prior to arrival and receive a full refund on land and domestic airfares.

Currently, DFAT advice on the Smart Traveller website is for Australians to "Reconsider Your Need to Travel" to Egypt.

In the latest incident, the BBC reports, at least 51 supporters of the deposed president Mohamed Morsi were killed by security forces in what the Muslim Brotherhood condemned as a massacre, but the military insisted was the result of an armed attack on a Cairo barracks.

Last week Intrepid Travel in Australia announced that "in the interests of our passengers’ safety" it would cancel a selection of trips due to depart before July 8 and to amend some Egypt itineraries currently in operation.
