Tens of thousands hit by two-day Lufthansa strike
Lufthansa has cancelled almost 900 flights after it lost a last-minute legal challenge to prevent a pilots’ strike.
The two-day walkout over pay began at midnight local time. Lufthansa says about 100,000 passengers will be affected.
Flights by Lufthansa’s partner airlines including Eurowings, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines are not affected, the carrier said.
The industrial action is the 14th strike over pay by the pilots’ union
Vereinigung Cockpit since April 2014.
Yesterday, Lufthansa made two legal challenges to halt the strike but a Frankfurt labour court first rejected Lufthansa’s application for an injunction and later in the evening the Hesse state labour court rejected the airline’s appeal.
Vereinigung is calling for a 3.7% pay rise for 5,400 pilots dating back to 2012.
