Thai plane crashes into control tower

Holidaymakers were reportedly injured after an aircraft on a domestic flight in Thailand skidded off the runway and hit a control tower on the tourist island of Koh Samui.

The Bangkok Airways flight with 68 people on board crashed during landing in heavy rain, the BBC reported.

Passengers were evacuated, but an unspecified number were wounded.

One of the pilots was reportedly dead in the accident, while five passengers suffered serious injuries, and two others in minor injuries. All injured passengers were evacuated to hospitals.

The ATR 72 aircraft was arriving from the western Thai town of Krabi.

An airport official told the Associated Press that it was raining heavily when the plane landed around 14.00 local time (08.00 GMT).

“The plane just pinched the control tower but there was no fire," Sakchai Jorpalit, district chief of the Thai tourist island, told the French news agency AFP.

He said most of the wounded were tourists, adding that some were hospitalised with non-life threatening injuries.
