The Dorchester Hotel Gets Green London Award

Andy Churchill demonstating the Green Prize and some of the multi-million pound investment that makes The Dorchester greener.

At the first ever Green500 and Better Buildings Partnership awards the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson presented a range of performance accolades to London organisations covering a range of sectors such as sports, arts, education, local government, transport and commercial landlords.

The Dorchester Hotel and Chelsea Football Club were among the recipients.

Both Green500 and Better Buildings programmes are funded by the London Development Agency to help deliver the Mayor’s target to cut London’s emissions by 60 per cent by 2025, create green collar jobs and stimulate a low carbon economy.

Together, over the last year, their 200 members have saved a massive 117,000 tonnes of carbon, equivalent to taking 100 double decker buses off London’s streets which would also fill 8.3billion footballs. Recent sign-ups include Arsenal Football Club and Saatchi and Saatchi.

From the world famous Dorchester on Park Lane, Andy Churchill, Chief Engineer, told VISION on Sustainable Tourism “Since we developed an environment policy a few years ago, we’ve been very committed to reducing our carbon footprint and other Corporate Social Responsibility objectives. Our new hotel, 45 Park Lane, will be open next year and we’ll then also be able to share and improve our overall contribution.”

Amongst a wide range of major initiatives, the Dorchester has:

•    Committed to a green purchasing scheme buying more and more goods and services from local sustainable-aware suppliers – even changing their landscape gardening company to one who specifies a sustainable service.

•    Begun a carbon-emission minimising process by spending nearly £3m ($4.5m, €4m) on three cooling towers and three turbo core chillers which, apart from minimising impacts, will also deliver better and more reliable air conditioning and cooling services to guests.

•    Transformed lighting to low energy lighting with 33% now covered, to roll out throughout the establishment shortly.

Chelsea Football Club collected a Silver Award for:

•    engaging the 42,000 people coming to every one of their home games and 1.3m users every week logging onto their website by asking their fans to lower the temperature of their washing machines and central heating, use public transport and switch their televisions off before leaving home for Stamford Bridge; from next season they will be establishing a car share scheme for fans at both home and away games.
