The twin cities of Tournon [pictured right with Tournon on this bank and Tain on the other] and Tain L’Hermitage form a gateway to the Ardèche and the Doux Valley, lying nestled among the famous vineyards and if you are a lover of wine and in particular red wine and on top of that chocolate, then this is the place to be.

Côte du Rhone wines come form this region and both towns are awash with places where you can just pop in an have a taste.

The town historic cities, although they feel like towns because they are quite small, are linked by the Marc Seguin suspended bridge, which has a wooden deck and is now only open to pedestrians and bicycles.

It is here that you will discover the secrets of the world-famous Valrhona chocolate and Uniworld arranges for a tasting on board and not only that, a demonstration of how to cook some crepes with an amazing chocolate sauce!

Tournon’s main attraction is a feudal castle that’s built into a rock overlooking the town dominating the river, with the castle’s foundations dating back to the 10th Century, with a part of the castle now housing a museum.

When in Tournon sur Rhône you have to visit the Collegiate Church of Saint-Julien and the Lycée Gabriel-Fauré, a school that was founded in 1536 by the Cardinal of Tournon and which claims to be the oldest lycée in France.

Tain l’Hermitage is much smaller than Tournon and great for shopping, with even a tiny outlet store at the Valrhona chocolate factory and several wine merchants that offer tastings of Côtes de Rhône wines from the Hermitage vineyards.

So for a laid back and really French experience, take the time to visit Tournon and Tain L’Hermitage, they are definitely worth it.

A Report by The Mole on location in Europe.
