Thomson moves into room-only bookings

Tuesday, 07 Oct, 2004 0

Thomson has created what it is calling a “holiday bed bank”, allowing customers to book accommodation online from a choice of nearly 2,000 hotels and apartments.

To launch the initiative, the company will be offering 1,500 hotels and apartments in 48 beach destinations – as well as nearly 500 city hotels – from £1 per night.

Thomson claims that it will have the biggest range of “quality checked beach accommodation” around, with bookings from one night to 99 nights available.

The company says the move comes in response to a tendency towards independent travel, with the market having grown 138 per cent since 1996.

Sales and marketing director Miles Morgan said: “This is definitely not the end of package holidays. We still sell around four million package holidays a year and we predict that the market will remain at around that level for the next few years.

“But the demand is growing in the tailor-made travel market and we want to be at the forefront of growth in this area.”
