Thousands of passengers hit by strike action today

Air France has been forced to cancel a quarter of its flights today as staff take part in their latest walkout, and German airline Lufthansa is warning passengers to expect major disruption due to a strike by airport workers.

Lufthansa is warning passengers that industrial action by airport baggage handlers, security staff and fire crews is likely to cause major delays up until 4pm this afternoon.

The airline has cancelled half of its 1,600 flights to and from Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Bremen airports, affecting a total of 90,000 passengers.

Information on Frankfurt Airport’s website says: “Due to a public sector strike at airports across Germany on Tuesday, April 10, major disruptions and flight cancellations are also expected at Frankfurt Airport (FRA).

“In particular, the security checkpoints for Piers A and Z in Terminal 1 will remain closed during the strike. Thus, passengers checking in at FRA for flights departing from an A or Z Gate will not be able to access the respective pier to get to their flights.

“We also expect longer waiting times at all other security checkpoints during the entire day. Passengers are therefore strongly advised to allow extra time for their journey and to check in as early as possible.

“If you travel to Frankfurt Airport by car, please take into account that access roads to the airport may be affected by strikers’ demonstrations.

“We recommend that passengers check the status of their flight on their airline’s website and take advantage of online rebooking options or contact their airline, before traveling to the airport.

“Passengers, whose flight has been cancelled without any immediate rebooking options, are kindly requested to avoid coming to the airport.”

A sixth day of strike action by Air France crew today has forced the airline to drop one in four flights. The airline said it will operate 65% of its long-haul, 73% of medium-haul and 80% of short-haul flights to and from Paris Charles de Gaulle.

A seventh strike day is due to take place tomorrow and more are scheduled for other dates this month.

The Foreign Office has advised British travellers: “There are planned strikes at Air France and its subsidiaries on 10, 11, 17, 23 and 24 April. You should check with your airline before travelling.”

The FCO is also reminding travellers to France that rolling strikes of two strike days in every five are planned on SNCF trains until June 28, with the next due on Friday.
