A car crash in Tiananmen Square, in which five people died, is believed to be a suicide attack.

Initially, it had been reported the crash, on Monday, was an accident.

Three people in the car and a Chinese and Filipina tourist at the landmark were killed and 38 others injured when the vehicle veered off the road, crossed safety barriers and caught fire.

It is now believed ethnic Uighurs, a Muslim minority from Xinjiang in China’s far west, carried out the attack.

Channel 4 News claims: "On Monday night, hours after the fire, Beijing police issued a notice asking local hotels about suspicious guests who had checked in since 1 October and named two suspects it said were from Xinjiang. Four hotels told Reuters they had received the notice."

The Beijing and Chinese authorities have so far made no official comment, except to say they are investigating the crash.
