Tiger demands early check-in

A news.com.au report by Jessica Hurt  says that budget airline Tiger Airways is advising people to check-in two hours before departure – or risk losing their seat.

The rules are the strictest for Australian domestic flights with low-cost competitors Jetstar and Virgin Blue allowing customers to check-in 30 minutes before departure.

Interstate, some passengers have been turned away from Tiger Airways flights, for missing the strict check-in deadline.

Airline spokesman Matt Hobbs said: “We do have a firm cut-off policy to ensure people who are there on time get to their destination on time.”

Mr Hobbs said it was important customers were aware of the policies.

He said the airline would try to accommodate late passengers who arrived before the estimated time of departure.

“They won’t lose their money if they turn up before the estimated time of departure and we will try to facilitate them on another flight,” he said.

The airline on Monday drastically reduced prices on 15,000 seats on selected domestic routes around the country.

Most of them, including Adelaide to Melbourne flights, were on sale from $9.95, one-way, including taxes. The fare yesterday was $49.95 and Tiger Airways is expected to be very aggressive in pricing over coming months.

The inaugural Tiger Airways flight arrives from Melbourne in Adelaide at 10.55am. The first flight out is at 12.25pm.

Tomorrow’s flights are expected to be near capacity. Tiger will have two flights a day each way, seven days a week.

Jetset Travelworld Group’s communications manager, Damien Hanger, said this week’s $9.95 fare was “quite an effective marketing tactic that Jetstar, Virgin Blue and now Tiger Airways have used in the past to stimulate awareness”.

Tiger Airways will fly Adelaide passengers directly to Tullamarine in Melbourne, compared with Jetstar which lands out of the city at Avalon.

Jetstar spokeswoman Simone Pregellio said the “service is working well for us”.

“What we have been finding is we have been so busy on the Adelaide services, especially Adelaide to Avalon over the Christmas break,” she said.
