Tiger stalks Thai AirAsia
Thai Airways is hopping into bed with a budget carrier in a bid to win back market share.
The Thai carrier has penned a joint venture with Singapore-based Tiger Airways, in which Singapore Airlines has a 33.7 percent stake.
The two companies will establish a new airline, Thai Tiger Airways, to compete head on with Thai Air Asia.
From 2011,Thai Tiger will operate both domestic and regional routes within a five-hour flying radius from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.
THAI president, Piyasvasti Amranand, commenting on the joint venture, said, “Looking at the figures, our market share used to be 82 percent. But as air travel grows our share has diminished.
“Even with Nok Air (a subsidiary of Thai Airways), together our market share is now 50 percent,†he added.
“Regionally, our market share was 42 percent seven years ago, it is now 33 percent. The lost business has gone to the region’s low-cost airline and we intend to get it back.â€
The market share of LCC segment has grown from two percent a decade ago to 17 percent at present, Piyasvasti said.
